What Is It Like Being A Therapist

I entered the field of psychology primarily because I’ve always been a curious person. Specifically curious about the human experience.

Not to sound like a robot, I’ve been curious about the humanness of humans. And if I’m being honest, only now, after finally starting to practice as a counselling psychologist, have I begun to scratch the surface.

Every week, at least once or twice, if I’m talking about my job, someone (mostly individuals outside the field) will ask me

What is it like being a therapist?

Expecting pathologising answers (“Everyone is traumatised”, “Everyone has OCD/Depression”). But I think they’re often taken aback by the answer I give them.

I tell them how privileged I am. To witness human strength, vulnerability, courage. How in awe I am of the stories of resilience I hear, day in and day out. How vital to our being emotions are in connecting us.

I am reminded time and again that emotions are the threads that connect us all. Each person’s story is unique, yet within the depths of our emotions, we discover the similarities that unite us as one. It means carrying the weight of others’ pain, absorbing the heavy burdens, allowing them to rest upon your shoulders.

To those who have entrusted their emotions to a therapist, know that your bravery inspires us everyday.
