Systems Beyond our Control

Therapy can support healing, but it cannot undo the harm created by unjust systems. Mental health professionals often find themselves contending with systemic barriers that impact their clients' lives. These can include inadequate healthcare access, socioeconomic disparities, institutional policies that hinder progress and broken political systems.

The recognition of these barriers can be disheartening, as we realise that despite our best efforts, some factors remain beyond our control. I, like many of my peers, entered the field with hope and the determination to bring about meaningful change. However, in the current political climate, there are daily reminders of our limitations within a flawed system.

Nonetheless, we advocate tirelessly, knowing that even small victories can have a profound impact on individual lives. We lean on our colleagues and support networks, finding solace in shared experiences and mutual understanding.

We are acutely aware of the systemic barriers that impede our clients' progress, and this awareness often feels like a heavy burden. Yet, it is this very awareness that fuels our determination to advocate for change and provide the best possible care within our means.

But one thing rings louder than anything else in my mind.

No amount of therapy can mend the fractures of a fundamentally broken system.
