Reflecting on my journey as a mental health professional, I've come to appreciate the delicate balance between client care and self-care. During my time at TISS, at clinical placements scheduling client sessions needed organisation skills, but under the safety of institutions (hospitals, clinics, NGOs) this was manageable. However, transitioning into private practice unveiled a new challenge: navigating the unpredictability of therapy sessions and the impact on my income.

The reality hit hard in my first month of practice – therapy appointments aren't akin to routine doctor visits. The fluid nature of clients' schedules made rescheduling sessions a daunting task, often resulting in significant fluctuations in my workload and income from week to week. It became clear that establishing a standardised cancellation and rescheduling policy was imperative to bring structure to both my practice and my clients' experiences.

Yet, what I hadn't anticipated was the overwhelming sense of guilt that accompanied implementing these policies. Each message outlining the guidelines felt like an apology, as if I were imposing unjust restrictions on my clients. However, I realised that these boundaries weren't about reprimanding clients for missed appointments; they were about honouring the value of my time as a professional.

Implementing cancellation and rescheduling policies wasn't about creating barriers; it was about fostering mutual respect and accountability within the therapeutic relationship. By setting clear expectations, I could better manage my schedule while ensuring that clients receive the quality care they deserve.

As mental health professionals, it's crucial to recognise that establishing boundaries isn't an act of selfishness; it's an act of self-preservation.
